Paul Zukowskyj shares the Lib Dem vision for greener, sustainable local development
I’m here today, at Hatfield Lawn Cemetery, to talk about the local plan and the reason that we’re here is that the hedgerow behind me is actually the boundary of one of the sites that’s proposed for housing in the local plan. Instead of the contemplative and quiet environment that we have today, we may well see disturbance from people’s back gardens overlooking the cemetery. I care deeply about our localNenvironment and our green spaces and how vital this isNto our health and well-being. That is why I have campaigned tirelessly against over-development and concreting overNour green spaces. Our roads areNalready congested. Further developmentNwill only put further pressure on our NHS, schoolsNand elderly care services. Once our green space is lost,Nit is lost forever. That is why the Liberal Democrats are providing a viable alternative for delivering housing. This would see development of new Garden Cities outside the Green Belt; an idea that we firstNproposed in 2008. There is even a suitableNlocation in Hertfordshire, but thanks to over a decadeNof inaction by the council, this idea has simplyNnot been followed up. I’ll continue to push for greener,Nmore sustainable alternatives that safeguards our existing communitiesNand builds a better future for us all.
